Our story
On Newhouse Road since 1920
The cottage itself dates from 1856; the blue plaque by the door gives our history. Fish and chips have been fried in it since 1920. The Cottage is a restaurant and a takeaway in one building: a counter for collection and a full service restaurant for those who want to sit down and take their time with a pot of tea.
The current team took the shop on in late 2024 and kept what mattered, fish and chips cooked to order. What we changed is how we do it. Fresh fish six days a week, bought to grade and individually weighed. Potatoes from a local merchant. Oil checked by instruments, not by eye. Every check written down on our compliance platform, so that we can see what was done and when.
Why we entered the awards
We entered the National Fish & Chip Awards to measure ourselves against the best shops in the country, in front of judges who look at everything. The fish, the preparation, the hygiene records, the people behind the counter. Finalist on Newcomer of the Year 2026 told us we were on the right road. Takeaway of the Year 2027 Top 20 tells us to keep going.
Round here
We are a Marton business. We sponsor local primary schools with regular fundraising prizes and employ local people all year round, not just for the summer season. We support a number of community organisations with free venue hire. If you have a local community project you believe we may be able to support, just ask at the counter.
